What Is Sample Rate?

The sample rate refers to how many times per second an audio signal is sampled during recording. It is measured in Hertz (Hz). Common sample rates include 44,100 Hz (44.1 kHz), used for CD audio, and 48,000 Hz (48 kHz), often used in video production.

A higher sample rate captures more detail of the original sound wave, resulting in better audio quality. However, increasing the sample rate also increases the file size and processing power needed.

What Is Bit Depth?

Bit depth determines the dynamic range of audio, or how accurately the amplitude of the sound wave is represented. It is measured in bits. Common bit depths include 16-bit, used in CDs, and 24-bit, used in professional recordings.

A higher bit depth provides greater dynamic range and reduces quantization noise, resulting in clearer sound. Similar to sample rate, increasing bit depth increases file size.

Balancing Quality and File Size

Choosing the right sample rate and bit depth depends on the intended use of the audio. For casual listening, lower settings may suffice. For professional production, higher settings are preferred.
